A

s the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) continues the search for its next leaders, candidates for commissioner positions have expressed their desire to restore public trust in the antigraft body, which has waned in recent years amid a string of controversies.

The KPK commissioner selection committee announced on Wednesday that 236 candidates had passed the administrative selection process and would undergo a written test a week from then. The panel selected them from 318 total applicants, down from the 376 people who applied in the 2019 selection round.

The applicants who have advanced to this year’s next round come from a variety of backgrounds. They include lawyers, civil servants, retired police officers and academics. Public figures, such as former energy and mineral resources minister Sudirman Said and former Kompas chief editor Budiman Tanuredjo, also advanced.

Another figure on the list was former KPK public service and education director Giri Suprapdiono, one of 57 employees dismissed after purportedly failing a controversial civic knowledge test in 2021.

Giri said he was “worried” about the current state of the KPK, which has been plagued by controversy since a 2019 revision to the KPK Law that many observers said defanged the agency.

“This current state has also been caused by the lack of exemplary behavior from its leaders, who had criminal charges and ethical violations instead,” Giri told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Allegations of bribery and sexual harassment have hit the antigraft body in the past years and have implicated now-dismissed KPK chairman Firli Bahuri, who is currently being investigated by the police for alleged extortion of a then-minister who was under KPK investigation.
