resident-elect Prabowo Subianto has promised to continue the legacy of his predecessor President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo by hosting the Independence Day celebration next year in Nusantara, which successfully made its debut during this year’s celebration on Saturday.

“God willing, [next year’s celebrations] will be held here,” Prabowo told reporters in Nusantara on Saturday after the flag-hoisting ceremony.

Seated next to Jokowi and First Lady Iriana Widodo, Prabowo watched as the outgoing leader led his last Independence Day celebration in the soon-to-be capital city.

More than 1,000 guests attended the celebration. They wore traditional clothes from cultures across the archipelago and were seated on a stretch of grass in front of Nusantara’s State Palace.

The government initially planned to invite up to 8,000 guests for the ceremony. But it later revised the guest list to 1,300, citing insufficient accommodation because of unfinished construction.

Saturday’s celebration at the new Garuda Palace in Nusantara was held simultaneously with a celebration of Independence Day at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, where Vice President Ma’ruf Amin and vice president-elect and Jokowi’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka were in attendance. The government said the parallel events were aimed at paying homage to Jakarta and to stage a “ceremony of transition” to the new capital.
