Indonesia Decides

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is mounting a challenge to the dominance of the Gerindra Party-led Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM) in key battleground regions as the hours tick down to the start of candidate registration for the regional head elections on Tuesday.

The PDI-P announced on Monday its candidate pairs in its stronghold of Central Java and in Banten that experts said would make the regional elections in November competitive again under the court-ordered new, lower nomination threshold.

The PDI-P nominated Andika Perkasa for Central Java governor, setting the stage for a battle between a former Indonesian Military (TNI) commander and a three-star police general on the KIM ticket, Ahmad Luthfi, who was the province’s former police chief.

Andika, who joined the PDI-P last year after a decades-long, decorated military career, will run with the party’s Semarang office head, Hendrar “Hendi” Prihadi as his running mate.

Meanwhile, Ahmad will run alongside former Central Java deputy governor Taj Yasin Maimoen.

Ahmad is also known to be a close ally of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, a former PDI-P member who still retains the support of parties in the KIM coalition in the two months left in office before he is succeeded by Gerindra patron, Prabowo Subianto.

The PDI-P has repeatedly said that it prefers to nominate its own members rather than outsiders.
