Nominees for the Jakarta gubernatorial election have started their campaigns early by going around the city and sharing their platforms with the people over the weekend despite not yet being cleared to run by the General Elections Commission (KPU).
The Jakarta election is shaping up to be a three-horse race, with two political party-backed candidates and an independent having registered their bids with the KPU last week for the spot widely considered as a springboard to the presidency. The KPU will only announce the final names on the ballot next month.
Among them is Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, who will run on the ticket of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) with actor Rano Karno as his running mate.
The pair were seen on Sunday morning hitting the streets at the popular Car-Free Day event around the Bundaran HI traffic circle in Central Jakarta and had breakfast with the crowd.
“We’re not talking politics or campaigning, just asking for the blessings of the Jakarta residents and introducing ourselves to them,” Pramono said, as quoted from a news clip.
He said they were also taking in complaints and aspirations from people they met on Sunday, such as Jakartans’ wish for the MRT rapid transit network to be extended to South Tangerang in Banten, on the outskirts of Jakarta.
The idea has been explored by MRT Jakarta and the Transportation Ministry but remains on hold due to a potential funding constraint.
