he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has backtracked on its plan to seek clarification from President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s son Kaesang Pangarep over his use of a private jet during a recent overseas trip, but it is continuing to examine reports of possible gratuity acceptance.
The directorate in charge of monitoring gifts received by public officials last week was ready to summons Kaesang to see whether his use of the private jet constituted an improper gift related to his family members who hold public office.
The initiative to question Kaesang came following intense public scrutiny of his lavish trip to the United States last month.
Such an inquiry would not be a criminal investigation, but improper gifts received in relation to a position in public office must be reported to the KPK to avoid criminal charges.
However, the directorate has now decided to cancel its plan after learning that an examination of similar matters at a different KPK division is already picking up pace. The latter is currently examining reports of alleged illegal gratuities filed by an antigraft activist and a lecturer against Kaesang.
“The reports are already being processed and examined. Therefore we decided to instead focus on the process at the directorate of public complaints,” KPK spokesperson Tessa Mahardhika Sugiarto said on Thursday.
But whether or not the KPK will launch a formal investigation into the incident depends on what the directorate of public complaints discovers.
