The inauguration of Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto as Indonesia’s eighth president will be attended by a slew of heads of state, his team has said, adding that invitations will be sent to dozens of global leaders while the 72-year-old former Army general prepares to take the nation’s highest office in less than two weeks.
Leaders of ASEAN member countries, some of the group’s external partners and select members of the Group of 20 (G20), will soon receive their respective invitations to attend the stately reception slated to take place in South Jakarta, they explained.
As Oct. 20, the official date of the government transition, approaches, Prabowo’s Gerindra Party said that it had spent much of its recent focus on ensuring the success of the inauguration event, which will mark the beginning of the Prabowo - Gibran Rakabuming Raka administration.
The pair secured a landslide victory at the February presidential election on the platform of continuity, garnering 58.6 percent of the vote. Since his victory became apparent, Prabowo has dedicated a lot of time to traveling around the world, partaking in trips that analysts have dubbed as his effort to establish a strong global recognition.
The defense minister has traveled to several countries, including China, Russia and France months before his presidential inauguration, signaling an ambition for Indonesia’s foreign policy that was previously lacking under President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s leadership.

Against this backdrop, Prabowo’s inauguration to the presidency is expected to feature a list of foreign VIPs, his team explained.
