ahdlatul Ulama (NU) chairman Yahya Cholil Staquf has predicted that half of the ministers in president-elect Prabowo Subianto's cabinet will be members of the Muslim organization.
"It's simply a demographic reality. A survey shows that more than half of Indonesian citizens identify themselves as NU members," Yahya said on Tuesday, as reported by Antara.
"Based on this demographic characteristic, I'm sure that at the very least half of the ministers in the upcoming cabinet will be NU members," he added.
Prabowo is expected to announce his cabinet lineup on Oct. 20, the day of his inauguration as president.
Yahya said the country’s largest Muslim organization was committed to supporting the incoming administration and expressed hope that the next president would continue the policies of outgoing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
"Even if there's going to be a change in policy, I hope [Jokowi and Prabowo] can discuss it beforehand so that we don't lose the progress that we've achieved," he said.
NU has enjoyed close political connections to the government throughout Jokowi’s presidency, including when the President picked its former leader Ma’ruf Amin as his running mate in the 2019 election.
