he National Police are hunting down more suspects following the arrest of a number of individuals thought to be part of a drug ring operating in Jambi.
Insp. Gen. Asep Edi Suher, deputy chief of the police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim), said the drug ring was capable of distributing 500-1,000 grams of crystal methamphetamine per week in the province.
“This [group] is not connected to any international syndicate, as the drugs are sourced from Medan,” Asep said on Wednesday in Jakarta, as quoted by Kompas.com.
He added that the information was obtained from a statement provided by Helen Dian Krisnawati, one of six suspects detained in connection with the case.
The Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) reported that it had detected suspicious transactions totaling Rp 1.1 trillion (US$70.79 million) over the past four years in Jambi as possibly related to drug crimes.
Sr. Comr. Arie Ardian Rishadi, deputy director of drug crimes investigation at Bareskrim, said the probe into the Jambi drug ring was still in its early stages.
“We will continue to pursue [additional] suspects and the source of the drugs [in] Medan, according to the suspect’s statements. We have identified the meth supplier in Medan and will continue to track them down,” said Arie.
