n his first speech after being sworn in as President, Prabowo Subianto thanked his predecessor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and the country’s other past presidents, including Megawati Soekarnoputri, for their roles in building the nation.
Sunday’s inauguration marked the start of Prabowo’s presidency, following his landslide win in February’s presidential election, his third bid for the nation’s highest office after losing twice to Jokowi, once in 2014 and again in 2019.
Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s eldest son, also took the oath of office as Vice President at the ceremony.
Noting that each former president had contributed to the nation in their own way, Prabowo urged everyone to respect and learn from their accomplishments.
He said the nation’s first president, Soekarno, had introduced the state ideology of Pancasila, while New Order ruler Soeharto had “helped maintain Pancasila and laid the foundation for a modern Indonesia”. BJ Habibie had facilitated the development of science and technology in the country, and Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid had championed tolerance among different religions and ethnicities.
Gus Dur’s widow Sinta Nuriyah Wahid was in attendance at Prabowo’s inauguration on Sunday.
