P

resident Prabowo Subianto plans to announce his cabinet lineup on Sunday evening, only hours after he is inaugurated as the new president, says a senior politician of his Gerindra Party.

“I’m not sure about the exact hour when the announcement is to take place. But it is certain that the new President will announce it at the Presidential Palace tonight,” Gerindra executive and House of Representatives deputy speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said on Sunday morning.

On that morning, Prabowo took the oath as the president for the next five years in a ceremony at a plenary session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR).

Dasco said that Prabowo would swear in his “new ministers on Monday morning and deputy ministers in the afternoon”.

Last week, Prabowo interviewed 109  potential candidates for ministers, deputy ministers and heads of state institutions for closed-door talks at his residence on Jl. Kertanegara in Central Jakarta. Prabowo also took them to orientation sessions at his other house in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Among the invitees were figures allied with Prabowo’s predecessor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, including nearly half of his cabinet members, who are potentially set to continue their jobs under Prabowo’s presidency.

Observers believe this is Prabowo’s political reward to Jokowi for the latter’s tacit support in the election, which Prabowo won alongside Jokowi’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Jokowi’s approval rating remained high in his final year in office. (ipa)
