he Yogyakarta City Police have arrested seven men suspected of being involved in the assault of two students of a pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Yogyakarta on Oct. 23
The police have alleged that one of the suspects provoked and provided alcoholic drinks to his accomplice before the assault, which turned out to be misdirected, the city police chief Comr. Aditya Surya Dharma said on Tuesday in Yogyakarta, as reported by kompas.id.
Two Pesantren Al-Munawwir students were attacked on the night of Oct. 23 when they were eating at a street vendor near a cafe on Jl. Parangtritis.
Aditya explained that prior to the assault on the two students, there was an incident at the café late night Tuesday to early Wednesday, which appeared to be related. The commotion involved people who were believed to be inebriated and left two people injured and the cafe interior damaged.
The two pesantren students were eating when they were suddenly attacked by the same group that had caused the earlier disturbance, the police chief said.
Aditya stated that the victims were assaulted with blunt objects, wooden planks, helmets and bare hands, and some perpetrators also used sharp weapons.
There was a possibility of a revenge motive stemming from the earlier disturbance, but the police were still investigating, the official said.
