O

ne man has died and several others have been injured after dozens of Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel stormed Selamat village in Biru-biru district, Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra, late on Friday.

The dead victim, identified as Raden Barus, 61, was buried on Sunday. He was found with stab wounds on the side of a road on Saturday morning. Residents took him to Sembiring Deli Tua Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later that day.

After an autopsy at the local police hospital, residents took his remains on Saturday evening to the Army’s Field Artillery Battalion 2/Kilap Sumagan, whose headquarters is located near the village, demanding justice.

“We don’t know for certain why the soldiers attacked us. They said there was a previous altercation between the soldiers and local residents. They attacked us blindly,” the Selamat village chief told kompas.id on Sunday.

Herna, a village resident, said more than 100 soldiers came to the village on Friday night at around 10.30 p.m. and started attacking residents in their homes.

“Some of them were dressed in Army uniforms, that’s how we knew [who they were],” Herna told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
