he government is expediting efforts to relocate 2,209 families affected by the recent eruptions of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) chief Lt. Gen. Suharyanto said on Wednesday.
Suharyanto said that in a ministerial meeting held on Wednesday at the Coordinating Human Development and Culture Ministry’s office in Jakarta, the government decided it would prepare two relocation options for the residents.
The first option would be centralized relocation, in which the government would provide land and ready-to-occupy homes for those in need of new housing. The second would be independent relocation, where the government would build houses for the residents on their own land, with necessary facilities and infrastructure provided by the government.
According to initial data from 776 families, around 10 percent have chosen the independent relocation option, while the remaining families have opted for centralized relocation.
“We are giving flexibility to the community so they can choose the solution that best suits their needs and circumstances,” Suharyanto said.
“The relocation data collection process continues to be carried out by BNPB through direct communications with the residents. The government is ensuring that recovery efforts will be continuously monitored and coordinated so that the affected residents can soon begin a new life in safer locations,” he continued.
As part of the relocation facilitation efforts, BNPB plans to build temporary shelters for the 2,209 families affected by the eruption. The temporary shelters will be constructed in four potential locations in Konga village.
