Indonesia is set to receive a fourth payment from Norway for its achievements in reducing deforestation under a bilateral cooperation scheme on emissions reduction in the forestry sector.

On Tuesday, the Forestry Ministry held an event in Jakarta marking the upcoming payment from Norway in the Results-Based Contribution scheme. The event was attended by Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq and Norwegian Ambassador to Indonesia Rut Krüger Giverin.

“This cooperation shows strong commitment for good cooperation, collaboration and collective action in facing global environmental challenges,” Hanif said in a statement issued by the ministry on Tuesday.

This time, Indonesia will receive US$60 million from Norway for preventing the equivalent of 237 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere from 2019 to 2020 through its deforestation reduction efforts, a statistic verified by an independent party.

In 2022, Indonesia received $56 million for reducing emissions from the forestry sector by 11.2 million tonnes in the 2016-2017 period.

The country also received a combined $100 million for the second and third payments, announced in December of last year, for reducing carbon emissions by 20 million tonnes for the periods of 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.
