ll eyes will be on President Prabowo Subianto’s administration on Monday with the rollout of the landmark free nutritious meals program, which will focus most of the work on densely populated Java in the first phase of a multiyear effort to improve the nation’s nutritional intake.
The free meals program is one of Prabowo’s campaign promises that aims to feed 82 million children, primary and secondary school students and pregnant women by 2029.
A series of trial runs have taken place, mostly in Jakarta and across Java, in the past few months since Prabowo assumed office in October of last year.
The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has so far prepared 190 kitchens in 26 out of 38 provinces nationwide that will provide the meals to students during the launching of the program on Monday.
West Java has the largest number of kitchens for the program, at 58, followed by Central Java with 40 and East Java with 32.
Jakarta has five kitchens for the Monday kickoff of the program, two provinces outside Java have eight while other provinces generally have one or two kitchens.
Nutrition agency head Dadan Hindayana said these kitchens include the agency’s own kitchens and those set by third-party food vendors.
