A

torrential downpour that struck Lampung over the weekend has triggered flooding in seven out of thirteen regencies in the province, affecting thousands of residents and causing two fatalities.

The province's capital, Bandar Lampung, was the hardest hit by the disaster, as flooding submerged more than 14,000 homes and impacted over 11,200 residents.

"Only four of the city's twenty districts remain unaffected by floodwater," Lampung Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) spokesperson Wahyu Hidayat said on Monday as reported by Kompas.

Three hours of heavy rainfall on Friday caused the Way Belau River, which runs through the middle of the city, to overflow, inundating nearby residential areas with floodwaters up to two meters deep.

Residents reported that furniture was swept away by the river and the floodwater also brought in thick mud and debris.

According to the locals, this is the worst flooding they have experienced in the past decade. While the area has seen recurring floods in recent years, the water typically never exceeds one meter in depth.
