A

pileup at the Ciawi tollgate in Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday night has left eight people dead, a Kompas TV journalist at Ciawi Regional General Hospital (RSUD) reported on Wednesday morning.

Bogor Police chief Sr. Comr. Eko Prasetyo said previously that the accident occurred when a truck heading to Jakarta lost control at the tollgate, hitting several vehicles waiting to pay their tolls.

Six vehicles were damaged, with three of them burned out.

“It’s suspected that the truck experienced brake failure, and then hit a group of vehicles [in front of it],” Eko said, as reported by Antara.

Victims of the smash were rushed to Ciawi RSUD for treatment.

Many of the victims, including a customer service officer with Jasa Marga toll road operator, received severe injuries.
