The University of Indonesia (UI) has ordered Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia to revise his controversial doctoral dissertation, ignoring calls from critics to have his degree revoked over academic dishonesty.
UI rector Heri Hermansyah announced the decision in a press conference on Friday, after the university’s rectorate, academic senate, board of trustees and board of professors finished deliberations on an ethics hearing into the dissertation.
The hearing discussed the findings of an internal investigation that confirmed that Bahlil had violated a number of the university’s academic standards, such as using data without permission from the sources and concluding the program in less than four semesters as required.
The university, Heri said, expected Bahlil to “improve the quality of the dissertation and the methods used” and to issue a public apology to the UI academic community.
He added that the university had placed sanctions on Bahlil’s dissertation advisor and his co-advisor as well as the university’s School of Global and Strategic Studies of Energy (SKSG UI) director and program head. The sanctions included postponing promotions and instructions for them to issue apologies.
"This incident must be viewed as an opportunity for evaluation and improvement of the education system, especially in SKSG UI. This joint decision has been made in a transparent and collegial manner," Heri said.
