A

manhunt is underway for around 50 inmates who escaped from the Kutacane Penitentiary in Southeast Aceh Regency, Aceh, on Monday afternoon after breaking through security doors and climbing the roof of the correctional facility.

Aceh Tenggara Police Chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Doni Sumarsono said that as of Tuesday, authorities had captured 16 of the escapees, including four who turned themselves in on Tuesday morning.

“We are still actively searching for the remaining fugitives and urge them to surrender. It’s better to turn yourselves in than face harsher sentences,” he said on Tuesday as quoted by Tribunnews.

Doni also mentioned that the police had stepped up surveillance in several "strategic locations" and encouraged the public to report any information about the escapees' whereabouts.

Several roads are under heavy security, and law enforcement officers are conducting patrols to track down the remaining fugitives.

According to Kutacane Penitentiary warden Andi Hasyim, the inmates escaped around 6:20 p.m. local time after breaking through two security doors at the facility.
