Taman Safari Indonesia currently has 14 giraffes, consisting of nine bulls and nine cows.
male giraffe calf has been born at the Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI) in Cisarua, Bogor regency, West Java, after a delivery lasting four hours.
TSI vice president of life science Bongot Huaso Mulia said the calf was born on March 7 sired by a bull named Jengo and his mate Tania.
Tania was pregnant for 14 months, which is a normal pregnancy period for a giraffe. The calf appears healthy and active.
The still unnamed calf could stand and walk just hours after being born.
“This is a very happy moment for us. The birth shows the success of the animal conservation program that we maintain at the safari park,” said Bongot, who is a veterinarian.
Currently the TSI has 14 giraffes, consisting of nine bulls and five cows.
The newborn calf is still under the supervision of his mother, keeper and the TSI life science team. His presence is expected to attract special attention from animal lovers, especially after his condition stabilizes.
