Eligible to vote and be voted for as the next pope, Jakarta Archbishop Ignatius Suharyo said that he was not in the position to become the leader of the Catholic Church and did not prepare anything for the trip to the Vatican.
akarta Archbishop Ignatius Suharyo will join the papal conclave to elect the successor of Pope Francis, who died on Monday after months of declining health.
Suharyo, 74, who was appointed a cardinal by Francis in 2019, said that he would “definitely participate” in the meeting to elect the new pope. He fulfills the requirement for the conclave, which allows only cardinals across the world not older than 80 years to join the process.
But the cardinal would fly to Vatican City later than initially planned, as he has yet to know the exact date of the conclave, one of the world’s oldest and secretive electoral processes.
“I was supposed to go on Saturday this week [April 26], but I heard from the Vatican ambassador for Indonesia that the conclave will kick off either May 5 or 6, so I decided to postpone my visit,” Suharyo said on Wednesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
“I would not know what to do [in the Vatican] waiting for a week, while there are still a lot of things to be done at home,” he continued.
Although included in the same pool of cardinals to be potentially elected as the next leader of the Catholic Church, Suharyo said he was “personally not in such a position” and did not prepare anything particular for the trip.
“I’m sure other cardinals in the conclave, who have attended more meetings and voiced their ideas often, have prepared more for this,” Suharyo said, adding that he would simply “listen to what the other cardinals say” to take part in the decision-making process.
