Experts attribute this alarming figure to the lack of critical safety regulations for bus and truck operators, specifically, the absence of mandatory brake system overhauls at least once every three years, undefined limits on driver working hours and rest periods and the lack of standardized mental and physical health requirements for drivers.
ransportation and safety experts have called for a "total reform of the national transportation safety system" following two separate accidents that claimed the lives of more than 20 people, once again highlighting the country's poor road safety standards.
A tragic bus accident claimed the lives of 12 people, including two children, in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, on Tuesday morning. The bus, operated by PT Antar Lintas Sumatera (ALS), overturned on the Trans-Sumatra toll road near Bukit Surungan at approximately 8:15 a.m.
The bus, en route from Medan, North Sumatra, to Bekasi, West Java, was carrying 35 passengers when it lost control on a downhill stretch of road near the Bukit Surungan Bus Terminal.
CCTV footage revealed the vehicle was traveling at high speed before veering off and overturning, damaging a nearby building in the process.
Rescue teams recovered 12 bodies trapped beneath the bus. Another 23 passengers sustained injuries and were transported to two local hospitals for treatment.
Padang Panjang Traffic Police chief First Insp. Jamalludin said the cause of the accident was still under investigation, though initial findings suggest brake failure.
The bus driver, who survived the crash, is currently in a coma and undergoing treatment at Padang Panjang City Hospital, said Padang Panjang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Kartyana Widyarso on Tuesday.
