The victims consisted of five civilians who were suffering from breathing difficulties after being exposed to tear gas and two police personnel who were hit by stones and blunt objects.
Central Java Police Medical and Health Department chief Sr. Comr. Agustinus said the victims were generally in better condition after receiving treatment.
“Five civilians are now conscious and there are signs of better health after receiving treatment,” he said on Thursday.
“They suffered from breathing difficulties due to effects of tear gas.”
Tens of thousands of residents flooded the streets of Pati on Wednesday, calling for the immediate resignation of Regent Sudewo amid a wave of controversy sparked by his widely criticized policies that have captured national headlines.
The massive protest against Sudewo was triggered by his decision to increase land and building tax rates by up to 250 percent in certain areas in the regency only two months into his term.
