D

enpasar District Court in Bali sentenced on Thursday Roman Nazarenko, a 40-year-old Ukrainian national, to life in prison after finding him guilty of operating an illegal drug laboratory on the resort island.

Presiding Judge Eni Martiningrum said Nazarenko was found to have violated articles 113 and 132 of the 2009 Narcotics Law, pertaining to the illegal production and distribution of Class I narcotics and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Eni cited the scale of the drug operation and its potential impact on society as aggravating factors in determining the sentence.

“He did not cooperate during the trial and also attempted to evade arrest by fleeing overseas,” Eni said during the verdict hearing.

Nazarenko’s sentence was in line with the punishment sought by prosecutors.
