T

he Batam Free Trade Zone Authority (BP Batam) said there had been no talks about license revocation for PT Esun International Utama, which allegedly imports and processes toxic and dangerous waste.

Environmental Minister Hanif Faisol Nurrofiq visited Batam, Riau Islands, on Monday and planned to close the company for processing electronic waste. The plan, however, was cancelled after the company reportedly deployed its workers to prevent the minister’s visit.

BP Batam said the follow up of Hanif’s visit was only focusing on strengthening coordination between various agencies.

Head of general affairs bureau at BP Batam, Mohammad Toufan, who attended the internal meeting after the ministerial visit, said the meeting only discussed instruction so that related agencies to be more selective.

The meeting was held hastily on Tuesday, attended by Batam city’s Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda), such as Batam City Police chief, head of Batam Prosecutors’ Office and Military District Command (Kodim) chief at BP Batam office.

“The discussion was more on cooperation on information related to the traffic of incoming and outgoing goods and supervision to prevent the entry of pollutants,” Toufan said.
