N

orth Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution has been widely criticized for his decision to stop trucks from Aceh carrying BL license plates and demanding they change the plates to North Sumatra’s own BK designation.

The BK plate is for vehicles registered in the eastern part of the province, and is colloquially known as the “Medan” license plate. Vehicles registered in the western part of North Sumatra use BB plates, known as “Tapanuli” plates.

Bobby’s action is aimed at reaping income from vehicle tax and it went viral after a video of one such stop was posted on social media.

In the video, Bobby was seen accompanied by several North Sumatra provincial officials and Langkat Deputy Regent Tiorita Surbakti.

The governor, the son-in-law of former president Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, was seen talking with the driver of a truck with a BL license plate in Langkat regency, which borders Aceh province.

“So how is it? Shall we fine you?” Bobby said while laughing.
