Pressure on govt for new climate pledge ahead of COP30

The government missed the September deadline to submit the new climate pledge ahead of the Brazil climate summit in November, but claimed that the new commitment would be more ambitious than the last one submitted in 2022.

alls are mounting for the government to submit its new climate pledge document ahead of the United Nations climate talks in Brazil next month, although critics have already cast doubt on the country’s ambition to expand renewable energy and cut down greenhouse gas emissions.

Indonesia has now missed several deadlines to submit its latest nationally determined contribution (NDC), a document reflecting a country’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global heating.

Such a document is submitted every five years since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015. Only 62 countries have submitted their latest NDC as of Tuesday, according to Climate Action Tracker.

Indonesia is among those who have not announced their new climate goals less than a month before the UN climate summit COP30 kicks off in the Brazilian city of Belém, where countries are scheduled to present their NDCs.

The Foreign Ministry’s director for development, economics and environment Tri Purnajaya said the government have finished drafting Indonesia’s new NDC and hoped to submit it before COP30.

The new NDC, he added, showed Indonesia’s stronger commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while the country continues to consider the domestic context, capacity and development gains.

“The targets are still more ambitious than the previous NDC,” Tri said during a discussion hosted by Just Coalition for Our Planet (JustCOP) on Tuesday.
