F

or Tuti Burhani, 48, recent reports of child abductions have heightened her anxiety that such crimes could happen to anyone, including her 10-year-old son in elementary school.

“As a parent, I am very concerned seeing this news,” Tuti told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday. “It’s made my husband and me more vigilant over our son lately.”

Tuti is among a growing number of parents fearing for their children’s safety amid a steady rise in kidnapping cases involving minors in recent years.

Earlier this month, the abduction of a four-year-old girl from a public park in Makassar, South Sulawesi, captured national attention after her parents reported her missing on Nov. 3. The girl, identified only as B, was found five days later in Jambi, more than 2,000 kilometers west of Makassar.

Authorities later uncovered a cross-provincial child trafficking ring after learning that B’s captor sold her to an accomplice in Sukoharjo, Central Java, for Rp 3 million (US$179.58) and then to two accomplices in Jambi for Rp 15 million before she was put up for adoption.
