uthorities are tightening security in Tesso Nilo National Park in Riau Province following months of heated land disputes, which culminated in the destruction of two government security posts by local residents.
A spokesperson for the Riau and Riau Islands Military Command, Lt. Col. Rangkuti, said authorities have deployed 100 additional personnel from the military, local police and forestry agency to the national park, bringing the total number of personnel to 350.
“The presence of the military at the site is intended to maintain stability and a sense of security, not to create tension. We are not there to act violently, but to protect the interests of the local communities within the national park itself,” he said recently.
Dozens of residents living inside Tesso Nilo National Park allegedly destroyed two security posts last Friday after demanding the removal of military personnel from the area. Videos circulating on social media showed residents dismantling the park’s entrance signage, tearing down a large announcement board and removing a metal portal using a dump truck.
