our members of a family of five were killed on Sunday when the car they were traveling in was struck by a train at an unguarded railway crossing in Pasuruan regency, East Java, underscoring authorities’ ongoing failure to improve the safety of railway crossings across the country.

Police said the incident occurred in Gununggangsir village, Beji district, at around 10 a.m. on Nov. 30 as the family’s car was passing the unguarded crossing from north to south, when the Mutiara Timur train approached from the west at high speed, traveling en route from provincial capital Surabaya to Banyuwangi regency.

The impact of the collision hurled the car, reportedly a sedan, several meters down the track before it overturned.

The four people who died at the scene have been identified as Muhaimin, 33, who was driving at the time of the incident, his wife Suci Nurjannah, 33, their son Muhammad Yisran Alim Mukhsin, 9, and their daughter Putri Indah Ramadhani, 6.
