rugmaker AstraZeneca plans to launch 20 new medicines by 2030, half of which will focus on treating cancer, the leading cause of global death and a continued significant health concern in Asia.
Some of the medicines will target lung and gastrointestinal cancers, which are prevalent among Asian men and women, as well as breast cancer, a major health threat to women in the region.
AstraZeneca Asia vice president Sylvia Varela said Asia’s most common cancers, lung, gastrointestinal and breast, were on the rise, with incidence and mortality rates steadily increasing over the past decade because of aging demographics, unhealthy lifestyles and greater exposure to environmental and occupational carcinogens, among other factors.
Home to 4.8 billion people or 60 percent of the world’s population, Asia accounts for 50 percent of the global cancer incidence.
The company’s plan to launch 10 new cancer medicines by 2030 was part of its bold ambition to make a difference to millions of lives, according to Varela.
“Within [AstraZeneca], we have an ambitious and powerful vision to transform care and eliminate cancer as a cause of death, ensure equitable access for all patients through innovative medicines, diagnostics and screening technologies,” she said at the ESMO Asia Congress 2025 press briefing on Saturday.
Held in Singapore from Friday to Sunday, the ESMO Asia Congress 2025 brought together researchers, clinicians and health industry players to showcase the latest scientific developments in oncology and strengthen collaborations to accelerate progress in cancer treatment.
