T

he Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) will increase the intensity of air surveillance operations in 2026, while continuing to rely on cooperation with other agencies.

“Bakamla plans to conduct air patrols three times a month,” the agency’s director for maritime air operations, Cdre Bambang Somantri, told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Bambang was speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony seeing off the Bakamla patrol vessel KN Pulau Dana at Magcobar Pier in Batam, Riau Islands. The 80-meter patrol vessel was carrying 90 tonnes of disaster relief for victims of the flooding in Aceh.

“Airplanes actually function as an extension of the state’s ships so that we can get information in the field fast,” he said.

Bambang said that due to cutbacks, Bakamla could only perform one large air operation. The area covered in the operation, however, was quite large, including Kalimantan, Natuna to the waters off Lhokseumawe city in Aceh. The main priority for the operation is monitoring people-smuggling operations at sea.

Bambang said that so far Bakamla had yet to possess its own aircraft. A procurement plan was being prepared by adjusting the plan to meet state budget capabilities.
