he Siau-Tagulandang-Biaro (Sitaro) Islands regency administration has been implementing recovery schemes and relocating residents who have been affected by the flash floods, under midterm and long-term plans.
“The step is being taken because several affected locations are in disaster-prone areas and are no longer suitable for reconstruction as residential areas,” Sitaro Regent Chintya I Kalangit said in Siau, North Sulawesi, on Saturday.
She said that the regency administration had not only focused on disaster emergency response, but has also applied sustainable solutions for public safety.
“Construction can no longer be done in locations affected by flash flood,” she said.
“That is why the regional administration [is] applying relocation schemes for mid-term and long-term.”
Chintya said the relocation was aimed at residents who lost their homes, whose homes were heavily damaged or were no longer technically viable for reconstruction.
The Sitaro Islands regency administration is studying various options for relocation sites, including regionally owned, family-owned or publicly owned plots of land that are ready for reconstruction as needed by affected communities.
