joint search and rescue team has recovered the black box of a chartered small airplane that crashed on Mount Bulusaraung in South Sulawesi last week, as crews continue searching for missing passengers and crew amid adverse weather conditions.
Col. Inf. Dody Triyo Hadi, Assistant Operations Officer of the Hasanuddin Military Command, said a special team tasked with recovering the black box located it on the slopes of the mountain, approximately 150 meters from the summit.
“The black box was found in its original position, attached to the tail of the plane. It remains intact, and the team is currently transporting it to the search and rescue base,” he said on Wednesday.
He said that on Sunday morning, search and rescue teams discovered debris believed to be parts of the fuselage, tail section and windows scattered across the fog-covered mountain. The tail section of the aircraft itself, however, was located in a remote and difficult-to-access area, requiring three days to reach, Dody added.
The ATR 42-500 turboprop, operated by charter airline PT Indonesia Air Transport, lost contact with air traffic control on Saturday afternoon during a flight from Yogyakarta to Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Rescuers later confirmed that the plane had crashed into Mount Bulusaraung, which straddles Maros and neighboring Pangkep regencies, about 26 kilometers from Makassar.
