S

earch efforts have continued for dozens of people missing in a deadly landslide in the disaster-prone Pasirlangu village in West Bandung regency, West Java, as the number of fatalities from the natural disaster climbed to 17.

The landslide swept through the village early Saturday morning, burying some 30 homes and forcing about 200 people to evacuate their homes for safer places.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) previously recorded 81 missing people in the incident as of Sunday, before more bodies were discovered. The authorities have yet to update the figures for those still missing.

The death toll has so far reached 17 people, the disaster agency recorded, an increase from nine it found over the weekend.

“The Disaster Victim Identification [DVI] team has successfully identified 11 bodies [of these 17 victims], while six others are still in the identification process,” BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari said in a statement on Monday.

The bodies of five of 11 identified victims have also been returned to their families to be buried, he added.
