R

iau provincial administration has declared an emergency alert over forest fires until the end of November, as haze from fires has begun to appear in several regions in the province.

Head of the Riau Disaster Mitigation and Fire Agency (BPBD), M. Edy Afrizal said the emergency status decree was signed by acting Riau governor SF Hariyanto on Friday.

“The upgrade in forest fire management status was decided by a meeting of relevant agencies and the Riau Regional Administration Leadership Forum [Forkopimda],” he said on Saturday.

“Considering the rainfall is already decreasing, the status was declared to anticipate potential fires, which have already increased in several regions.”

After the status was declared, Riau BPBD immediately requested support from the central government, such as helicopters for water bombing and patrol duties, as well as weather modification operations.

“We will immediately send a letter to the central government through the BNPB [National Disaster Mitigation Agency] for forest fire support, which needs more intensive effort,” Edy said.
