undreds of villages across Indonesia are facing difficulties in securing land for the construction of the Red and White Cooperatives, slowing the rollout of President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship program.
In Magelang, Central Java, officials are struggling to provide at least 1,000 square meters of land for cooperative buildings in each of its 17 subdistricts.
Head of the city’s Trade, Industry, Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Agency, Syaifullah, said most government offices in Magelang are built on small plots, due to lack of land availability.
“Out of the 17 subdistricts in our city, only three have managed to prepare land for the Red and White Cooperative buildings so far. However, one of the available plots measures only 600 square meters, while another cannot accommodate the government’s required building dimensions of 20 by 30 meters,” he said on Thursday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
Syaifullah noted that the issue is not unique to Magelang. “Almost all urban areas in Indonesia are experiencing similar problems,” he added.
The central government requires villages to allocate a plot of at least 1,000 sq m for the construction of the Red and White Cooperative building. The land must be ready for immediate use, strategically located, easily accessible, disaster-resilient and legally owned by the village.
In addition, the buildings must be supported by adequate basic infrastructure, including electricity, clean water supply and internet connectivity, to support cooperative operations.
