T

he Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru facilitated the repatriation of 153 Indonesians who were deported by Malaysian authorities on Saturday by sea to Batam, Riau Islands.

Saturday’s repatriation was part of a big wave of deportations since the start of the year for immigration violations.

The deportees departed from Pasir Gudang Port in Johor state, boarding two ferries, the MV MDM Express and the MV MDM Express 02, to Batam.

Based on consulate data, the first batch consisted of 35 returnees from the Kemayan Immigration Detention Depo (DTI) in Pahang state. Meanwhile, the second batch consisted of three different DTIs in Pekan Nenas in Johor, Aji Selangor in Selangor state and Lenggeng in Negeri Sembilan state.

The consulate general’s task force head Jati H. Winarto oversaw the deportation process to Batam. He said that the government must protect all citizens, especially those with health risks.

“We ensure that every repatriation process is done according to procedure and in a humane way,” he said.
