22-year-old woman from Riau has died after allegedly being trafficked by her boyfriend to work in an online scam compound in Cambodia, underscoring growing concerns over Indonesians falling victim to trafficking networks in the country.

Fanny Wahyu Kurniawan, head of the Riau office of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Service Center (BP3MI), said the woman, identified as Susi Yanti Br. Sinaga, died on Sunday morning after receiving intensive care at the Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital in Phnom Penh.

“The family has asked the Migrant Workers Protection Ministry to assist with the repatriation process. The family will cover the costs, but we have also written to the Siak administration to help cover part of the expenses,” he said on Monday.

The cause of Susi’s death remained unclear at the time of reporting.

Separately, Siak Regent Afni Zulkifli offered her condolences to Susi’s family.

“We hope the family she leaves behind is given strength and patience,” Afni said.

Afni added that when she first learned Susi had fallen ill in Cambodia, she immediately coordinated with the Riau governor, the Riau Police chief, as well as the Manpower Ministry and the Foreign Ministry to bring her home as soon as possible.
