View all search resultsWidespread deforestation in Sumatra has destroyed much of the tigers' natural habitat, depleted their prey and forced them to venture closer to human settlements in search of food.
Sumatran tiger cub was rescued by authorities in Pelalawan regency, Riau, after it repeatedly preyed on goats belonging to local farmers, marking the latest case of human-wildlife conflict involving the critically endangered species.
The cub was captured on Tuesday night in Pulau Muda village, Teluk Meranti district, by officials from the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) with assistance from local police and village authorities.
Riau BKSDA head Supartono said the tiger had attacked residents’ livestock several times since late last month, prompting villagers to report the incidents to authorities. BKSDA officials immediately installed a box trap in the area, but the animal managed to avoid capture.
“On Monday night the tiger again preyed on a villager’s goat inside its cage, so we decided to place another box trap nearby,” Supartono said on Thursday.
“The effort paid off the following evening when the cub entered the trap at around 9 p.m. and our team immediately secured the animal after it was caught,” he added.
He said officials from the BKSDA tranquilized the cub the following day before evacuating it to the agency’s facility, where veterinarians conducted a health examination on the tiger.
“The tiger is a female estimated to be under one year old. It is in generally good condition, displaying normal behavior with no injuries found on its body, although it appears somewhat thin,” he said.
