Catholic church parish in North Sumatra requested that state-lender Bank BNI return in full its credit union funds of Rp 28 billion (US$1.63 million), which had been swindled by a former sub-branch head who issued fictitious banking products.
The treasurer at St. Fransiscus Asisi parish in Aek Nabara, Labuhanbatu regency, Sr. Natalia Situmorang admitted having given signed fund withdrawal forms to the former sub-branch head, Andi Hakim Febriansyah.
“Hakim then moved the funds from the credit union’s account to BNI’s time deposit account,” Sr. Natalia told a press conference at the Medan Diocese Cathedral’s hall on Friday in Medan.
Natalia said she handed over the signed withdrawal forms because Andi offered “BNI Investment Deposit” with a yield of 8 percent per year.
She said she did not know how much money was taken by Hakim from the credit union in the past seven years since the parish started to invest its funds into BNI time deposit in 2019.
“The withdrawal forms were empty, only contained my signature without my name, withdrawal date and amount,” she told The Jakarta Post on the sidelines of the press conference.
“Haim used the forms to withdraw money from the credit union and moved them to BNI time deposit.”
