he Batam Free Trade Zone Authority (BP Batam) finally provided an official explanation on the decision to cancel reexporting electronic waste from the United States, saying the cancellation was based on technical findings in the field.
M. Toufan, head of general affairs bureau at BP Batam, said that the decision was taken after a team from the Environment Protection and Management (PPLH) conducted in-depth inspection.
“The electronic waste from the US is not reexported because inspection found that there was only less than 5 percent of hazardous and toxic goods in one e-waste container,” he said in a written statement sent to The Jakarta Post on Saturday. “The percentage still allow the e-waste to be managed by waste recycling company PT Desa Air Cargo [DAC].”
PT DAC has official permit to manage hazardous and toxic waste in Kabil Industrial Waste Processing Area in Batam, Riau Islands.
Toufan added that for goods which are not categorized as hazardous and toxic goods, the processing becomes the responsibility of goods owners.
“All of results from the processing will be exported and indirectly increase Indonesian export value,” he said.
Responding to the question on disposal process at Kabil waste processing center, BP Batam ensured that all procedures were carried out according to regulation. To ensure this, a joint team was formed to monitor each phase.
