he Southeast Aceh Prosecutor’s Office carried out flogging punishments for 15 offenders on May 12 with a total of 202 strokes of rattan cane, making it the largest accumulation of strokes in the regency.
Southeast Aceh Prosecutor’s Office head Mohammad Purnomo Satriyadi said the flogging was conducted in the executing of legally-binding verdicts by the Kutacane Syariah Court.
He said that from the 15 convicts, there was a female convict, identified as NA from Lawe Mamas Indah village, Darul Hasanah district.
Purnomo said the female convict received the harshest punishment with 100 strokes of rattan cane in an adultery case while 14 other convicts were flogged between six to 10 strokes for their involvement in gambling cases.
“We carried out the flogging as our commitment in enforcing syariah (Islamic law) in Aceh,” he said on May 12.
He said the convicts were flogged after they were found guilty of violating the Aceh Qanun (Bylaw) No. 6/2014 on Jinayat (Criminal Law).
The flogging was carried out openly in the prosecutor’s office yard and were witnessed by Southeast Aceh Regent HM Salim Fakhry and representatives from the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) as well as the public.
