t least 13 people were killed and 20 others injured in violent clashes between two tribal groups in Wamena, Jayawijaya regency, Papua Highlands, last week.

Jayawijaya Police chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Anak Agung Made Satria said the conflict involved members of the Lanny and Hubla tribes, who attacked each other with bows and arrows, stones, machetes and other sharp weapons in several parts of Wamena on Friday and Saturday.

The clashes also sparked fires that damaged a number of buildings and public facilities across the city.

“Two people were killed and 19 others injured in the clashes on Friday. On Saturday, 11 people were killed and one person was injured,” Satria said on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Satria said the clashes also caused extensive property damage, with 177 houses, 63 traditional honai homes, eight shophouses, a school building and a village office set on fire. The conflicting groups also torched 48 cars and 43 motorcycles.

The violence also displaced more than 1,000 residents across Jayawijaya regency, who are now being sheltered at three temporary evacuation sites: a local church, the Jayawijaya Military District Command headquarters and the Jayawijaya Police headquarters.
