ndonesian officials in Malaysia have rescued two Indonesian migrant domestic workers who were allegedly subjected to abuse by their employers, an incident that has renewed concerns over the protection of Indonesian migrant workers abroad.
Erry Kananga, Acting Head of the Social and Cultural Affairs Function at the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru, confirmed that both workers are now under protection at the consulate’s temporary shelter facility.
"Authorities are assisting the victims in filing police reports and providing legal aid, as part of efforts to ensure their rights are protected,” Erry said in a statement on Sunday.
Erry said the consulate is coordinating with the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to locate and secure the safety of another victim in the same case, who is believed to be in Kuala Lumpur.
Authorities were alerted to the case on Saturday after one of the victims, identified as YY, filed a report with the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru alleging physical abuse by her former employers.
YY told officials that she and two other Indonesian migrant workers, identified as YA and SH, had been working at the same household and were repeatedly subjected to physical violence.
