he Semarang Corruption Court in Central Java started the trial on Monday of former Pati regent Sudewo on extortion and corruption charges, with the reading of charges by a prosecutor from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
Sudewo is charged with extorting officials appointed to fill various positions in 401 village administrations in 21 districts across Pati and taking bribes for railway track projects at the Transportation Ministry’s Railway Directorate General in 2022.
Wearing a brightly colored batik shirt, Sudewo calmly listened to charges read by KPK prosecutor Luhur Supriyohadi during a court session led by Judge Edwin Pudyono Marwiyanto.
Also charged were Karangrowo village head Abdul Suyono, Arumanis village head Sumarjiono and Sukorukun village head Karjan.
KPK prosecutor Luhur accused Sudewo of extorting more than Rp 100 million (US$5,632) from candidates for village official positions.
Sudewo also allegedly threatened not to open selection for village officials in the following years if the candidates did not pay the kickbacks.
After the trial hearing, Sudewo denied all charges.
