reunion dinner is an important occasion for Chinese families. Held on the eve of Chinese New Year, the dinner is mandatory for all family members, as it may be the only annual gathering opportunity.

Those looking for eateries with touches of nostalgia to hold a reunion dinner may want to check out the list below.

Angke restaurant

Founded in 1976, Angke restaurant began as a small restaurant in Kalijodo, North Jakarta. The restaurant is known for its palatable Hakka dishes and currently has two branched, one in Ketapang, West Jakarta, and the other Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. For the upcoming Chinese New Year's eve, the eatery's Ketapang branch will only serve to-go meals, including grilled duck, fried noodles and steamed pork meatballs, perfect for those who want to dine at home.

Those who want to have a reunion dinner in the restaurant can make reservations at Angke's Kelapa Gading branch. Dinners range in price from Rp 2,988,000 (US$ 223.76) for six people to 9,888,000 for 10 or 12 people. The set menu includes Chinese New Year's must-have dishes, such as babi hong (braised pork cooked in aromatic spices), fried noodles, cold salad and steamed chicken.

Furama

Having been around for more than three decades, Furama owns two branches, one in Hayam Wuruk, West Jakarta, and the other in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. On Chinese New Year's eve, the two outlets are offering dinner packages complete with barongsai (lion dance) and live music performances. The dinner package is priced at Rp 2,900,000 and Rp 3,900,000 for 10 people, which includes 11 types of dishes such as yu sheng (raw fish salad for prosperity toss), ayam rezeki (chicken cooked in Chinese herbs), garoupa fish cooked in two styles and nian gao (sticky rice cake).

Fajar restaurant

Opened in 1958 by Chinese chef Wang Siang Kam, Fajar restaurant now has two branches, one in Pantai Indah Kapuk and the other in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. In regard to reunion dinners, the eatery offers set menus starting from Rp 1,928,000 for six people to Rp 3,328,000 for 10 people. The dinner package includes steamed chicken, sapo haisom (sea cucumber cooked in gravy), babi hong  and free-flowing drinks, as well as plain and Hainanese rice.

Cahaya Kota

Cahaya Kota was founded in 1943. Unlike the other restaurants, Cahaya Kota is not offering a dinner package. However, for this special occasion, the restaurant will serve yu sheng and has credit card promotions on offer. In addition to yu sheng, guests can also order the restaurant signature's dishes such as black pepper beef and Cantonese style garoupa fish. (asw)
