The annual Indonesia Menari (Indonesia Dance) is set to be held on Nov. 19 starting at 1 p.m.

This year’s event will be held in three locations in different cities, namely Grand Indonesia in Jakarta, Park Mall in the Central Java city of Surakarta and Mall 23 Paskal in Bandung, West Java.

Participants are encouraged to dance to a compilation of songs arranged by renowned musician Pongky Prasetyo, consisting of traditional Indonesian tracks such as “Bungong Jeumpa” from Aceh, “Cik Cik Periuk” from West Kalimantan, “Cingcangkeling” from West Java, “Rasa Sayange” from Maluku, “Si Patokaan” from North Sulawesi and “Gemu Fa Mi Re” from East Nusa Tenggara.

“For Indonesia Menari 2017, I have combined traditional dance movements from several provinces and included a few modern dance movements,” said Rosmala Sari Dewi, the event's choreographer. “The movements are easy to follow, so you don't have to be a dancer to participate in the event.”

Those aiming to attend the event can learn the dance movements by watching a tutorial on the event’s official website.

Initiated by Galeri Indonesia Kaya from the Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation and held since 2012, Indonesia Dance will also feature local celebrities dancing with participants, such as Fero Walandouw, Marcell Darwin, Yuki Kato, Ayushita, Rangga Moela, Citra Kirana and Morgan Oey.

“Hopefully this event will encourage more people, especially those of the young generation, to learn traditional dances and be proud of our nation’s culture,” said Renitasari Adrian, the foundation's program director. (kes)
