Senyawa’s latest album, Sujud, is included in best albums of the year lists of two influential British music magazines, The Wire and The Quietus.
Indonesian avant-garde duo Senyawa’s album Sujud is included in The Wire’s Top 50 Releases of 2018.
Sujud ranks seventh on the list compiled by the British music magazine, while British jazz group Sons of Kemet, Egyptian electronic musician ZULI and American eclectic musician Ben Lamar Gay rank first, second and third, respectively.
On Twitter, Senyawa said “it is an honor for ‘Sujud’ to be in the list of this year’s best album by two influential media: The Wire: Adventures In Modern Music and The Quietus.”

Sujud was released on Nov. 2 by Seattle-based record label Sublime Frequencies, which focuses on “acquiring and exposing obscure sights and sounds from modern and traditional urban and rural frontiers”, according to its website. The label previously released Radio Sumatra: The Indonesian FM Experience and Folk and Pop Sounds of Sumatra Vol.1, among others.
Senyawa, comprising Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi, is known for its contemporary and experimental take on traditional sounds. In its songs, Rully’s explorative vocals blend into the primal and intense music of Wukir, who plays the bambuwukir, a bamboo instrument that can produce both string and percussion sounds.
The duo also gained praise from British online music and pop culture magazine The Quietus, getting ranked 22nd on its Albums of the Year 2018 list.
On its latest album, Senyawa is said to have “consistently and carefully focused on ways to play and record their two sound sources to arrive at a fusion whose weight belies their minimal sonic elements; with Sujud they have made one of the heaviest and most seductive albums of the year”. (wng)
