Nineteen days after its premiere on Jan. 24, Orang Kaya Baru (Nouveau Rich) has attracted more than one million moviegoers and entered the country’s box office in early 2019.

The film’s director, Ody C. “Ochay” Harahap, expressed happiness upon hearing the news.

Alhamdulillah [thank God], this film can be enjoyed by a lot of people,” Ochay said in an official statement. “This film features a light storyline with comedy and drama. It’s relatable to people who watch it.”

Penned by Joko Anwar, Orang Kaya Baru follows a financially struggling family who become rich overnight. Starring Lukman Sardi, Cut Mini, Derby Romero, Raline Shah and Fatih Unru, the film displays how norak (tacky) the family is, but at the same time also delivers a message about the importance of family.

Ochay expressed hope that more Indonesian films would enter the box office.

“Filmmakers nowadays have to maintain their standards as people start to believe in the quality of Indonesian films,” said Ochay. “Filmmakers have to make films with good storytelling that are presented in a good appearance, therefore people will be able to enjoy it.” (wir/kes)
